Type species. Mutilla lugens Lynch Arribálzaga, 1878 (male), by original designation (junior subjective synonym of Mutilla cometa Gerstaecker, 1874 (female) according to Fritz & Martinez, 1993: 10).

Taxonomic history. Valid generic name.

Sex association. The female of the type species was associated and identified (as Mutilla cometa Gerstaecker, 1874: 61 ) by Fritz & Martinez, 1993: 10.

Distribution. Neotropical.
