Remarks
Zariquiey (1950) cites “numerosos ejemplares” [many specimens] from the type locality but without stating the exact number of specimens in the type series or establishing the holotype (all were originally deposited in the author’s collection). Subsequently, Zariquiey refers to having examined 25 males and 69 females. Escolà (1969) refers to 18 specimens with the same data as mentioned by Zariquiey (1950). In the MCNB we have located a series of 20 males from Zariquiey’s collection, with the same collection dates as the original description (hand-written by Zariquiey). Only some of these specimens have a label numbered by Zariquiey: specimens MZB 78-2041 to MZB 78-2056 also have another label with the symbol ♂ followed by a correlative number from 1 to 17. We have also found 30 females of the same origin. The type and the inscription on the collection label are identical in all the males in the series and in the majority of females (with a just few variations in some cases). The collection label associated with the females has the date 16 September 1934; Zariquiey (1950), however, does not state the exact day. Only two of these specimens are identified as being part of the type series: the male MZB 78-2041 has a red label with the inscription “ Holotipo ” (possibly hand-written by Lagar) and the numbered labels “16” (hand-written by Zariquiey) and “ ♂ 1”; one of the females, MZB 78-2919, has a similar red label with the inscription “ Alotipo ” in the same hand-writing. It is worth pointing out that Fresneda & Salgado (2016) refer to 18 specimens in this type series, with five “ paratipos ” in the FLC (J. Fresneda, pers. comm.). These five specimens probably correspond to those that, according to Lagar (1980), were lent by Zariquiey. In the MNHNP general collection we have located at least two specimens with red labels inscribed “ Paratipo ” that seem to have been written by the same person as wrote the “ Holotipo ” and “ Alotipo ” on the labels mentioned above.
Zariquiey (1950) provides the morphometric size of the antennal segments of the male numbered “16” in this series, which corresponds to the number on the label written by Zariquiey associated with specimen MZB 78-2041. For this reason, it is likely that this specimen was chosen and labelled as the “ holotype ”. Unfortunately, this specimen is missing both its pronotum and head. The labels with the symbol ♂ followed by a number seem to correspond to the measurements made by O. Escolà (1966, 1969, 1983; Escolà & Cuadras, 1977) of various species of Bathysciinae.
