Type species. Mutilla spixi Diller, 1990 (replacement name for Mutilla melanocephala Perty, 1833 (female) not Schrank, 1781 not Fabricius, 1793), by automatic designation (see Sphinctomutilla André, 1908 ).
Taxonomic history. Replacement name for Sphinctomutilla André, 1908 not André, 1899. Junior subjective synonym of Pseudomethoca Ashmead, 1896 according to Krombein, 1951a: 758. Resurrected to generic status by Casal, 1970c: 385. Junior subjective synonym of Pseudomethoca Ashmead, 1896 according to Quintero & Cambra, 1996a: 340. Resurrected to generic status by Lelej & Nemkov, 1997: 19. Junior subjective synonym of Pseudomethoca Ashmead, 1896 according to Garcia et al., 2006: 382. Subjectively invalid name.
Sex association. The male of the type species was associated and described by Garcia et al., 2006: 382.
Distribution. Neotropical.
