Type material
Paratypes and possible paratypes: MZB 78-1215 / MZB 78-1225, MZB 78-1242 / MZB 78-1249 (12 ♂♂, 51 ♀♀), type loc., 1-X-1964 O. Escolà leg. [cited by Lagar (1966) as O. Escolà leg. XI-1965?] │ MZB 78-1226 / MZB 78- 1241, MZB 78-1250 / MZB 78-1266 (52 ♂♂, 50 ♀♀), type loc., X-1965, F. Rodríguez leg. [cited by Lagar (1966) as O. Escolà leg. XI-1965?] │ MZB 2021-0847, MZB 2021-0848 (1 ♂, 1 ♀), type loc., 10-XII-1965, J. Mª Jacas, F. Raventós & A. Lagar (ex coll. X. Bellés).
Remarks
The type series cited by Lagar (1966) consists of the following material: 1 ♂ (the holotype) and “numerosos paratipos de ambos sexos” [numerous paratypes of both sexes] collected on 10 December 1965 (Jacas, Raventós and Lagar leg.); “una serie importante” [a long series] of specimens collected in November 1965 by O. Escolà and deposited in the MCNB collection; and, lastly, “algunos ejemplares” [a few specimens] collected in December 1958 and November 1959 (L. Mª Udina-A.Poyo leg.) deposited in Lagar’s personal collection. All specimens originate from the type locality. Fresneda & Salgado (2016) give the number of specimens deposited in the FLC collection, which include the holotype and paratypes of the material cited by Lagar (1966) except the specimens collected by O. Escolà. There are two paratypes deposited in the CJC “Lagar-Jacas leg.”, donated by Lagar (J. Comas, pers. comm.). Other two paratypes deposited in the XBC (collection date of 10 December 1965) have recently been donated to the MCNB collection.
The MCNB collection has numerous specimens from the type locality (64 ♂♂ and 101 ♀♀) labelled as paratypes, with their corresponding red labels, some of which also have labels with the inscription “ Speophilus jacasi nov. sp. ”. Nevertheless, the dates and/or collectors associated with this material do not correspond to the information given by Lagar (1966). A total of 102 specimens (52 ♂♂ and 50 ♀♀) were collected by F. Rodríguez in October 1965 (data cited by Escolà, 1977). The labels of most of these specimens seem to have been hand-written by Lagar, according to the opinion of J. Fresneda (pers. comm.); the rest were hand-written by O. Escolà. Rodríguez was a collaborator who donated the specimens he collected to the Museum; this material was added to the series collected by Escolà (O. Escolà, pers. comm.). No specimens originating from F. Rodríguez is to be found in the CFL collection, according to Fresneda & Salgado (2016). On the labels written by Escolà corresponding to the remaining specimens (O. Escolà leg.) the collection date is given as 1 October 1964 (information cited by Escolà, 1977) rather than November 1965, the date that Lagar (1966) attributes to the paratypes deposited in the MCNB. We believe that it is likely that this discrepancy is due to an error in the publication date, given that on the record card of the Escolà’s data file, the entry associated with the collection date of 1 October 1964 has the inscription “ Speophilus jacasi (paratipus) (prep) 45 ex Bathysciinae”. In this record card there is no record of any material being entered in November 1965 (nor any specimen in the general collection).
In light of the material examined, and taking into account the information provided by J. Fresneda and O. Escolà, it seems likely that all the material deposited in the MCNB is part of the type series and was attributed by Lagar (1966) to the collector and date cited .
