(a) Subsp. alpina :

Leaves and bracts more or less pubescent. Corolla purplish; lower lip often whitish. 2« = 22. Calcareous rocks, screes and grassy slopes. From Spain to Greece and Romania.

Dwarf variants occur relatively frequently in E. Spain, and have been called S. javalambrensis Pau , Not. Bot. FI. Esp. 2: 35 (1888).
