cristata Porat, 1876:6–7 View in CoL (non Newport, 1844:98).
Specimens: four from Brazil in NHRS (T. Kronestedt, pers. comm.).
Original rank: species. Current rank and status: synonym of S. viridicornis Newport, 1844 ( Kraepelin 1903; Brölemann 1909; Attems 1930; Bücherl 1939, 1942 a).
Anatomical illustrations: none. Remarks: Newport (1844) proposed this species for an individual from China; Porat (1876) noted Newport’s account but assigned the name to the Brazilian specimens, which cannot be conspecific with that of Newport. Bücherl (1939, 1942 a) placed cristata sensu Porat in synonymy under S. viridicornis but did not acknowledge the fact that the name is truly attributable to Newport (1844). Thus cristata has been misassigned to a New World species that is surely different from what Newport originally intended, and I include it in this list even though it properly applies to a form in China. Scolopendra cristata was omitted by Bücherl (1974).
