Miturga australiensis (L. Koch, 1873) View in CoL , new combination

Liocranum australiensis L. Koch, 1873: 429 .

Medmassa australiensis : Simon, 1898: 195.

Remarks. Although L. Koch (1873: 429) refers to the description in L. Koch (1867: “366”), Bonnet (1957: 2747) and others found that the last page in present copies of L. Koch (1867) is 352. Hence, the valid date should be that of L. Koch (1873) who however states that he no longer has the specimen and merely repeats the description from L. Koch (1867).

Simon (1898) suggested (“peut-être”) that the species should be included in Medmassa . No type specimen is known, but the description refers to a spider with a carapace length of 4.75 mm (large for a corinnid), with leg IV only slightly longer than I (12 vs 10.5 mm). Also considering the eyes (similar sizes and spaced with wider back row), spination (no strong pairs), colour (black spots on dorsal abdomen) and presumed claw tufts; it is most likely a species of Miturga to which the species is here transferred, if in fact it is not a nomen nudum.
