Type species. Photopsis nana Ashmead, 1896 (male), by original designation (misspelled as nanus).
Taxonomic history. Junior subjective synonym of Ephuta Say, 1836 according to André, 1902c: 51. Resurrected to generic status by Ashmead, 1903: 306. Junior subjective synonym of Photopsis Blake, 1886 according to Bradley, 1916: 191. Resurrected to subgeneric status (in Sphaeropthalma Blake, 1871 ) by Schuster, 1958: 14. Junior subjective synonym of Sphaeropthalma Blake, 1871 according to Pitts et al., 2004: 224. Subjectively invalid name.
Sex association. The female of the type species has not been recognized; the female of another species was associated (on the basis of specimens collected in copula) but not described by Brothers, 1975: 591 ; no female has since been described.
