4. Kalanchoe nyikae Engler (1895: 189) View in CoL [as name only in Engler (1894: 38)] ( Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 ).

Type:— TANZANIA. Lushoto District , Bombo, undated [between 1891 and 1894, when Holst was in the region, see Polhill & Polhill (2015: 199)], C. H. E. W. Holst 3918 (Herb. B, syn- †; lectotype, Herb. P barcode P00374084 ! [Image of the specimen available for examination online at http://coldb.mnhn.fr/catalognumber/mnhn/p/p00374084]), lectotype designated by Raadts: 111 (1977) .

Epitype:— KENYA. Ex hort. South Africa. Gauteng Province, Pretoria, suburb Weavind Park. 2528 (–CB), 15 August 2019, G.F Smith 1083, (Herb. PRU), designated by Smith & Figueiredo (2020b: 155).

Nomenclatural notes:—The typification of the name K. nyikae was discussed by Smith & Figueiredo (2020b: 154–155). Given the poor condition of the lectotype of the name K. nyikae , it was epitypified ( Smith & Figueiredo 2020b: 155).

Taxonomic note:—The name K. nyikae is in use for an accepted species (see Smith & Figueiredo 2020b: 155– 156).

5. Kalanchoe crenata (Andrews 1798: t. 21) Haworth (1812: 109) var. collina Engler (1895: 189) [as name only in Engler (1894: 38, 61, 64)].

Type:— TANZANIA. Usambara , Kwa Mshusa [Kwa Mshuza; Kwa Msunga], 550 m, “Steppenbusch”, 5 August 1893, C. H. E. W. Holst 8907 (lectotype, Herb. B barcode B 10 0153763! [Image of the specimen available for examination online at https://herbarium.bgbm.org/object/ B100153763 ]), lectotype designated by Raadts (1977: 139) .

Isolectotypes:—Held at Herb. G, LE, and M (fide Raadts 1977: 139, as “ isotypes ”).

Nomenclatural notes:—When Engler (1895: 189) published the name K. crenata var. collina , he did not cite any material. Seventy years later, Cufodontis (1965: 729) did not typify the name where he referred to it.

The first effective typification of this varietal name that could be traced was where Raadts (1977: 139) lectotypified it on C.H.E.W. Holst 8907. Since the name K. crenata var. collina does not have a holotype, the C.H.E.W. Holst 8907 specimens cited by Raadts (1977: 139) as being housed at Herb. G, LE, and M cannot be isotypes; they are rather isolectotypes ( Turland et al. 2018: footnote to Art. 9.4).

Taxonomic notes:—The brief Latin description provided by Engler (1895: 189) only stated: “inflorescentiis glandulosis; corollae laciniis latioribus”. The name K. crenata var. collina is treated as a synonym of K. lanceolata ( Forsskål 1775: CXI & 89) Persoon (1805: 446) ( Figs 4 View FIGURE 4 and 5 View FIGURE 5 ). Raadts (1977: 139) records that specimens seen by Engler partly belong to K. lanceolata and partly to K. crenata . The specimen C.H.E.W. Holst 8907 was designated as (lecto-)type of the name K. crenata var. collina by Raadts (1977: 139) because the descriptive text, “bis 2 m hohe […]”, included in Engler (1895: 189) applies only to this specimen.

6. Kalanchoe holstii Engler (1895: 189) [as name only in Engler (1894: 38)].

Type:— TANZANIA. Usambaras, “Mascheua” [Mashewa / Maschana, Tunsa], im Gehölz der Gebirgssteppe [Steppenbusch, Gebirgssteppe], 500 m ü. Meer, July 1893 [accessioned 13 October 1893], C.H.E.W. Holst 8811a (lectotype, Herb. B barcode B 10 0153758! [Image of the specimen available for examination online at https:// herbarium.bgbm.org/object/B100153758]) lectotype designated by Raadts (1977: 117).

Isolectotype:— TANZANIA. “Ostafrika, Usambara, Mascheua[?]”, C.H.E.W. Holst 8811a (isolectotype [treated as “ isotype ” by Raadts (1977: 117)], Herb. P barcode P00374098! [Image of the specimen available for examination online at http://coldb.mnhn.fr/catalognumber/mnhn/p/p00374098]).

Nomenclatural notes:—When Engler (1895: 189) published the name K. holstii , he only cited “Holst n. 8811a”. As far as could be determined, Herb. B holds a single C.H.E.W. Holst 8811a specimen and it is tempting to regard this specimen as the holo type. However, Raadts (1977: 117), who lecto typified the name, is followed here because no evidence could be found that Engler, when publishing the name, did not have additional material at his disposal.

The physical specimen and lectotype of the name K. holstii , i.e., Herb. B barcode B 10 0153758, C.H.E.W. Holst 8811a, was not seen during a visit to Herb. B on 22 November 2024.

The isolectotype, Herb. P barcode P00374098, of the name K. holstii , i.e., C.H.E.W. Holst 8811a, would appear to be a few flower fragments removed from the lectotype held at Herb. B, and donated to Herb. P.

Taxonomic note:—The name K. holstii is treated as a synonym of K. glaucescens Britten (1871: 393) (see for example Descoings 2003: 157).
