Ischioceras Provancher, 1882 . Nat. Canad. 13: 8. Male, female.
Gender. Feminine.
Type species. Ischioceras rugosa Provancher, 1882 (male erroneously stated as “female”, designated below as lectotype; not “male”), by monotypy (junior subjective synonym of Myrmosa unicolor Say, 1824 (male), according to Provancher 1887: 252). There are two specimens in the Provancher Collection housed at the Laval University, Québec, Canada (Gisèle Deschênes Wagner, pers. comm., 2008); these bear appropriate labels written by Provancher and are clearly syntypes. The first (see fig. 1 View FIGURES 1–2 ), under the name Ischioceras rugosa Provancher , has the following labels: “ ♀ ”, pink, by Provancher; “753”, yellow, by Provancher; “ Myrmosa unicolor Say ”, red borders, by Provancher; lectotype label, red, by Noël Comeau; lectotype label, red, by John Barron. In order to fix the application of the species name unambiguously to this specimen, specially since the other syntype is not congeneric, we hereby designate it as the lectotype. We have requested the addition of a sixth (red) label: “ LECTOTYPE / Ischioceras rugosa / Provancher, 1882 / ♂ (not ♀) A.S. Lelej / & D.J. Brothers, 2008 ”. The second specimen, under the name Methoca [sic!] stygia Say, has the following labels: “ ♂ ”, pink, by Provancher; “1405”, yellow, by Provancher; “ Methoca stygia Say”, red borders, by Provancher; allotype label, mauve, by Noël Comeau. We have requested the addition of a fifth (red) label: “ PARALECTOTYPE / Ischioceras rugosa / Provancher, 1882 ♂ / A.S. Lelej & / D.J. Brothers, 2008 ”
Taxonomic history. Junior subjective synonym of Myrmosa Latreille, 1796 according to Provancher 1887: 252. (The “male” of Ischioceras sensu Provancher, 1882 is Methocha Latreille, 1804 according to Provancher 1887: 253.) Subjectively invalid name.
Sex association. The female of the type species as such has not been recognized; the female of Myrmosa unicolor Say, 1824 was associated and identified (as Mutilla thoracica Blake, 1886: 204 not Smith, 1860) by Melander & Brues, 1903: 7.
Distribution. Nearctic, Palaearctic.
