We detected two species of Helvella in Garry oak ECMs in BC: Helvella cf. costifera Nannf. (NRL7AL) and an unidentified Helvella sp. Eighteen species of Helvella have been documented in BC ( Kroeger and Berch 2017), and although GenBank contains almost 40 sequences of Helvella from BC, none of these match our sequences from Garry oak ECMs at NRL and Ships Point Park (SP). In our phylogram, NRL7AL clusters most closely with Helvella tinta Q.Zhao & K.D. Hyde, 2016 , a species discovered from Picea euphratica forests in China ( Hyde et al. 2016) but appears to be conspecific with a recently accessioned sequence identified as H. costifera (AMH001). This H. costifera sequence originated from a vouchered specimen collected on the side of a trail on unburned ground in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (Tennessee, USA). SP73a is related to an unidentified species found fruiting in Florida ( Helvella sp. FLAS-F-59998) and forming ECMs in a mixed pine– oak forest in the United Kingdom (LMKR1123, Suz et al. 2017). Nguyen et al. (2013) confirmed suspicions that Helvella lacunosa Afzel., 1783 from western North America and Mexico formed a well-supported clade different from the eastern North American, European, and Asian taxa; these western “ H. lacunosa ” consist of at least four taxa. Similarly, it appears that other Helvella species on Vancouver Island might await description. Although Helvella dryophila Vellinga & N.H. Nguyen, 2013 was recently described as a new species associated with oak in California ( Nguyen et al. 2013), the Helvella species that we detected in this study are not H. dryophila .
