Biennial 15-60(-100) cm. Leaves arachnoid-lanate to -tomentose beneath; lobes linear-triangular to linear-lanceolate, with rigid apical spine 3—10(— 15) mm. Capitula usually numerous, in a dense corymb, with 2-8 subtending leaves equalling or somewhat exceeding capitulum. Involucre (17-)20-25(-30) x 12-30 mm, densely, rarely sparsely, arachnoid-lanate; bracts patent; middle with a rhombic, purple, fimbriate-ciliate appendage and weak apical spine 1 *5-3*5 mm. Corolla 17-28 mm, purple; tube as long as limb. Achenes 5-6 mm; pappus 16-22 mm. • C. & S. Italy. It.
