(C. acaule var. gregarium Boiss. ex DC. ):

Stem 0—11 (—15) cm. Leaves patent-pubescent beneath, especially on the veins; lobes with stout spines 6-12 mm. Capitula usually solitary, rarely 2-5, crowded or shortly pedunculate, with 1-3 subtending leaves equalling or exceeding capitulum. Outer involucral bracts usually obtuse, with spine 1-2 mm; middle usually acute, with pungent spinule. Pappus 18-22 mm, much shorter than the corolla. 2n = 34 + 2B. Damp pastures and screes. • Mountains of S. Spain.
