Asplenium serratum var. caudata Rosenstock (1906: 310) . TYPE (first-step lectotypification designated by Morton & Lellinger, 1966: 8): BOLIVIA. La Paz [“Charopampa prope Mapiri”], November 1907, Buchtien 1111; Second-step lectotypification (here designated): S [accession S-R-499]!; isolectotype NY [barcode 149294]!, US [barcode 00066872] !).

Plants epiphytic. Rhizomes erect, 1.1–2.5 × 0.4–0.7 cm, scales 2.5–5.7 × 0.2–0.5 mm, linear-lanceolate, brown to blackish, irregular wall thickening, strongly thickened cell walls with inconspicuous lumina, mainly in the distal region, apex attenuate, base peltate, margin regular with sparse glandular projections. Stipes 0.7–2.4(3.5) × 0.1–0.3 cm, stramineous to brown, short compared to the laminae (1/15 to 1/25 of the length). Laminae (11)12–57 × (0.5) 0.7– 3.5 cm, linear-lanceolate, membranaceous to chartaceous, green when fresh, stramineous when dried, apex acute to caudate, base decurrent, margin regularly crenate, rarely crenate-dentate. Veins free, 1-forked, at 30°–45° angle from thE midrib. Indusia ElliPtic to linEar, sori 2–4 PEr cm of lamina in thE middlE rEgion. SPorEs 50–70 μm long, cristatE-echinulate, with a prominent rounded areola distally and folds ending in projections, forming smaller areolae.

Distribution and habitat:— Bolivia, Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela. Occurring in dense rainforests in the Amazon region, growing as epiphyte at 100– 550 m.

Taxonomic notes:—In Amazonia, small forms of Asplenium serratum may resemble Asplenium loriforme , however, the two species can be distinguished by the angle between the secondary veins and the midrib, which is 60°–75° in A. serratum and the spores have a cristate-alate perispore with large areolae (vs. 30°–45° with cristate-echinulate perispore and small areolae in A. loriforme )
