Genus Haphsa Distant, 1905 View in CoL

Haphsa Distant, 1905: 64 View in CoL [type species: Dundubia nicomache Walker, 1850 View in CoL ( India)].

Diagnosis

Body medium-sized (body length around 28 mm). Head including compound eyes slightly wider than mesonotum. Postclypeus moderately prominent, with symmetrical series of fuscous fasciae along transverse grooves. Pronotum much longer than head and distinctly shorter than mesonotum excluding cruciform elevation. Lateral pronotal collar dentate. Mesonotum mostly black with some greenish or ochraceous marks. Wings hyaline, with eight and six apical cells on fore wing and hind wing, respectively. Fore wing with apical cells in short lengths. Fore wing with infuscations only on radial and radiomedial crossveins. Male operculum long and wide, about twice as long as wide, almost reaching posterior margin of abdominal sternite V. Male opercula separated medially. Male abdomen slightly longer than head and thorax together. Male abdominal tergite 3 wider than mesonotum. Timbal cover about as long as wide, mostly concealing timbal but exposing a small portion of inner part of timbal in dorsal view. Male pygofer obovate in ventral view. Clasper and upper lobes of pygofer absent. Uncus large, with uncal lobes fused at base, bifurcate distally. Uncus seldom curved (not hooked), almost parallel to pygofer distally in lateral view, in nicomache . Basal lobe of pygofer absent. Aedeagus thin, protruding from underside of roof-like structure of uncus.

Species included

Haphsa nicomache (Walker, 1850) . Haphsa conformis Distant, 1917 , Haphsa dianensis Chou et al., 1997 [‘nomen dubium’, as indicated by Wang et al. (2021)], Haphsa durga (Distant, 1881) ( Figure 2 View Figure 2 ), Haphsa fratercula Distant, 1917 , Haphsa karenensis Ollenbach, 1928 , Haphsa lueta Wang et al., 2015 , Haphsa nana Distant, 1913 , Haphsa opercularis Distant, 1917 and the new species ( Figure 1 View Figure 1 ) described below are not regarded as congeneric in morphological as well as molecular phylogenetical views, but I refrain from erecting a new genus here, awaiting a further comprehensive morphological review with sufficient material.

Remarks

Haphsa sensu stricto can be distinguished from other Haphsa -like genera by the following characteristics: male operculum very long, almost reaching posterior margin of abdominal sternite V; uncus with basal roof-like structure; and uncal lobes not hooked inwardly in lateral view.

One of the species placed in Haphsa , Haphsa sulaiyai (Boulard, 2005) , is now transferred to Cantata to become Cantata sulaiyai (Boulard, 2005) comb. n., which has the peculiar characteristics of Cantata : basal lobes of pygofer present; uncal lobes long and slender; and male opercula long.
