Sporadothrix Hermann, 1907 View in CoL View at ENA stat. rev.
Sporadothrix: Hermann 1907:8 View in CoL [1908: 165].
Type species: Sporadothrix gracilis Hermann, 1907 View in CoL , by original designation; Hull 1962:347; Oldroyd 1974: 81–82 (fig. 77 entire ♀ [not congeneric]); Londt 1994: 76.
Londt (1994: 76), after studying the holotype of S. gracilis View in CoL , and noting its obvious similarity to Acnephalum cylindricum Oldroyd, 1974 View in CoL , synonymised Sporadothrix View in CoL with Acnephalum View in CoL . Now that a revision of Acnephalum View in CoL (as Acnephalomyia View in CoL ) has been completed, I have come to a different conclusion. Not only is gracilis View in CoL similar to cylindricum View in CoL , I now believe them to be conspecific. As the older name takes precedence, cylindricum View in CoL must fall as a synonym of gracilis View in CoL . In addition, this species shows a number of marked differences when compared to all other species previously placed in Acnephalum View in CoL and so I reverse my 1994 decision and here reinstate Sporadothrix View in CoL , which, as a result of the synonymy of cylindricum View in CoL , remains monotypic.
Some of the characteristics considered diagnostic, and supporting the separation of Sporadothrix View in CoL from Acnephalomyia View in CoL are listed in Table 2 View TABLE 2 .
