Revised description. Medium-sized, broad fusiform, trivaricate shell with conical spire; apical angle ~55–65°. Protoconch unknown.Teleoconch of up to five whorls.Suture weakly incised, shallowly undulating. Early teleoconch whorls convex with faint shoulder. Axial sculpture of eight to nine prominent ribs, overrun by delicate adis, IP and abis and prominent P1–P2 on antepenultimate and penultimate whorls. Later teleoconch whorls with broad, steep subsutural ramp and marked shoulder. Last whorl attaining ~80% of total height; three raised, weakly foliaceous varices and three weaker intervarical ribs. Subsutural ramp with subequal adis, IP and abis and only slightly weaker tertiary cords. P1 strong, P2 atrophied, P3 of medium strength, P4, P5 roughly equal to P1, P6 atrophied, forming spines of medium length on varices; ADP, MP weak. Secondary cords weaker, s3 and s4 occasionally forming short spines on varices; s1, s2, s5 and s6 occasional and weaker. Fasciole prominent, swollen, delimiting very broad pseudoumbilicus. Aperture ovate; outer lip with crenulate edge, prominent D1–D5, often bifid (particularly D2 to D4), forming close-set, paired denticles close behind peristome. Anal canal broad, poorly delimited; siphonal canal relatively short, narrow, fused, bent to the right. Columella straight, smooth, slightly twisted at siphonal canal. Columellar callus forming broad rim, sharply delimited from base, erect at siphonal canal, adherent in parietal area.
Discussion. Vokes (1971: 65) placed Murex vindobonensis ligeriana Tournouër, 1875 in Ocenebra , which is adopted herein also for Murex vindobonensis Hörnes, 1853 . Ocenebra vindobonensis (Hörnes, 1853) differs from the extant Ocenebra erinaceus ( Linnaeus, 1758) in its conical spire and bifid denticles in the outer lip. Labial denticles in O. erinaceus when present are always weak. When Tournouër (1875) described Murex vindobonensis var. ligeriana , he illustrated (pl. 5, fig. 3) a specimen bearing spiny P1 to P5, lacking P6, ADP and MP and with a high spire bearing P1 and P2. Glibert (1952a, pl. 7, fig. 5a–b) illustrated a specimen with very similar characters under the name Tritonalia vindobonensis var. ligeriana , but he illustrated two other specimens (pl. 7, fig 5c–d) devoid of spines. We agree with Glibert (1952a) that these two morphotypes (one spiny and one devoid of spines) represent variations of a single species. The specimen from the Burdigalian/Langhian (Early/Middle Miocene) of Montpeyroux ( France), described as Ocenebra vindobonensis by Goret & Pons (2013, pl. 4, fig. 2) resembles the morphotype devoid of spines of O. ligeriana figured by Glibert (1952a) in its higher spire, in its reduced spiral sculpture on the subsutural ramp, in its shorter spines on the terminal varix and in its simple denticles in the outer lip. The same features distinguish the specimens from the Serravallian of the Karaman Basin ( Turkey), described herein as Ocenebra breitenbergeri sp. nov. from Ocenebra vindobonensis . Finally, O. vindobonensis differs from O. ligeriana by having a lower spire, spiral sculpture on the subsutural ramp (including adis, IP, abis), and a reduced P2.
Paleoenvironment. Shallow marine, inner neritic.
