Revised description. Large, solid, broad fusiform shell; apical angle ~60–65°. Protoconch unknown.Teleoconch of up to five whorls. Suture linear or shallowly undulating. Early teleoconch whorls convex with faint shoulder placed below mid-whorl. Axial sculpture of about ten narrow ribs, separated by slightly wider interspaces, overrun by weak adis, IP and abis and more prominent P1, P2, P3 with delicate s1, s2, forming cancellate pattern on last two spire whorls. Later teleoconch whorls with broad, weakly convex to weakly concave subsutural ramp, marked shoulder angulation placed short distance above abapical suture. Axial ribs prominent, forming blunt tubercles at shoulder. Last whorl attaining ~80% of total height, slightly inflated with broad subsutural ramp, angled periphery, weakly convex below, rapidly contracting at base. About nine broad ribs, fading over subsutural ramp. Subsutural ramp moderately prominent adis, IP and abis with single tertiary intercalated, adjoined by thread at each side; P1 weak, P2–P5 prominent, P6,ADP, MP weaker, s2–s5 forming weaker but prominent recessed cords. Secondary cords adjoined by one tertiary thread on each side. Secondary cords weakly scabrose; growth lines forming cancellate pattern in interspaces. Fasciole prominent, swollen, delimiting broad pseudumbilicus. Aperture wide, ovate; outer lip thickened by terminal varix, with crenulate edge, bearing the denticles ID trifid, D1 to D6 often bifid. Denticles close behind peristome. Anal canal moderately incised. Siphonal canal moderately short, narrow or fused, slightly deflected to the left, weakly dorsally recurved. Columellar callus forming broad rim, sharply delimited from base, erect at transition to siphonal canal.
Paratethyan synonyms. Four names have been established for this species. De Gregorio (1885a) introduced Murex craticulatus ergnapus De Gregorio, 1885a based on the specimen illustrated in Hörnes (1853: pl. 24, fig. 9) and Murex craticulatus perisus De Gregorio, 1885a for the specimen illustrated by Hörnes (1853: pl. 24, fig. 11). Murex craticulatus erpis De Gregorio, 1885a is an objective synonym of Murex craticulatus perisus. As first revisers we chose Murex ergnapus De Gregorio, 1885a as the name for this species. Murex ( Occenebra [sic]) boeckhi Hoernes & Auinger, 1885 is a subjective junior synonym of Ocenebra ergnapus (De Gregorio, 1885a) .
Discussion. Ocenebra ergnapus (De Gregorio, 1885a) is characterized by its biconical last whorl with marked shoulder angulation. This species was discussed by Hörnes (1853) and De Gregorio (1885a) in context with Murex craticulatus of Brocchi, 1814, described from the Pliocene of Italy [= Gracilipurpura craticuloides ( Vokes, 1964) ]. This would imply a placement of the Paratethyan species in Gracilipurpura Jousseaume, 1880 [type species Gracilipurpura craticulata ( Bucquoy & Dautzenberg, 1882) ; present-day, Mediterranean Sea]. Gracilipurpura craticulata , however, is slender fusiform with high spire and long, sometimes fused siphonal canal, shallow subsutural ramp and comparatively delicate, scabrose spiral cords.
Occurrences in the Eastern Paratethys described Iljina (1993) from the Karaganian and Konkian (Middle Miocene) of Kazakhstan differ in their shallower subsutural ramp, convex periphery and prominent P5 and P6. We have not examined the Eastern Paratethyan material and we are not certain about the placement of those specimens.
Paleoenvironment. Shallow marine, inner neritic.
Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): North Alpine-Carpathian Foreland Basin: Grund ( Austria) (Hoernes & Auinger 1885); Vienna Basin: Niederleis ( Austria) (Hoernes & Auinger 1885); Pannonian Basin: Bánd, Várpalota ( Hungary) ( Kovács & Vicián 2024; Strausz 1966); Krka Basin: Vajndol ( Slovenia) ( Mikuž 2009).
