Additional material. 10 spec., NHMW 1846 View Materials /0010/0013, Mold ( Austria) .
Type locality. Maria Dreieichen ( Austria), North Alpine-Carpathian Basin .
Type stratum. Sand and clay of the basal Loibersdorf Formation.
Age. Early Miocene, Eggenburgian (Burdigalian).
Etymology. littoralis, Latin for ‘living by the sea’, referring to the occurrences in coastal environments.
Diagnosis. Large stocky fusiform, solid, trivaricate shell with three densely foliaceous varices bearing prominent P1–P6 and weaker secondary cords, lacking spines; suture relatively superficial; aperture narrowly ovate, relatively weak denticles within.
Description. Large stocky fusiform, solid, trivaricate shell; apical angle ~52–56°. Protoconch unknown. Teleoconch of up to five whorls. Suture moderately incised, shallowly undulating. Early teleoconch whorls strongly shouldered with broad subsutural ramp. Axial sculpture of three raised, trigonal varices with three weaker intervarical ribs. On last two spire whorls, spiral sculpture of prominent adis, IP and abis, very prominent P1 along shoulder, slightly weaker P2, P3 and delicate s1, s2. Last whorl convex, attaining ~72–75% of total height, with broad, shallow subsutural ramp, rounded shoulder, moderately constricted below. Varices very prominent, densely foliaceous with one weak intervarical rib. Spiral sculpture of prominent adis, IP and abis; very prominent, rounded P1; P2 weaker, P3, P4, P5 strong, P6 weaker, s1 and s2 fine, s3 relatively strong, s4 and s5 fine ADP occasionally strong, MP fine, ads weak. Growth lines forming dense, scabrose sculpture in spiral interspaces. P1 forming blunt trigonal tubercles on shoulder varices. No spines on varices in available material. Fasciole moderately swollen, delimiting broad pseudoumbilicus. Aperture narrowly ovate; outer lip very broad, strongly thickened, with weakly crenulate edge, weak D1–D5 (D5 occasional) placed just behind peristome, partly arranged in pairs. Anal canal very broad, indistinct; siphonal canal moderately long, fused, slightly bent to the left. Columella straight to weakly excavated. Columellar callus forming broad, adherent rim, sharply delimited from base.
Discussion. Ocenebra littoralis nov. nom. is characterized by its narrowly ovate and comparatively small aperture, which differs from the larger apertures of all other Paratethyan congeners and also from that of the extant Ocenebra erinaceus ( Linnaeus, 1758) . Ocenebra littoralis sp. nov. is generally smaller than the Pliocene to extant Ocenebra erinaceus and has a less incised suture. Ocenebra erinaceus has weaker labial denticles.
Ocenebra littoralis is reminiscent of Ocenebra vindobonensis (Hörnes, 1853) from which it differs in its densely foliaceus varices, which lack spines and much weaker denticles. Ocenebra scorpio sp. nov. differs in its higher spire, deeply incised suture, reduced P2 and long spines.
Paleoenvironment. Coastal marine, inner neritic in vicinity of mudflats and oyster reefs as described by Mandic et al. (2004) for the basal Loibersdorf Formation.
Distribution in Central Paratethys. Eggenburgian (Early Miocene): North Alpine-Carpathian Foreland Basin: Maria Dreieichen, Mold, Loibersdorf ( Austria) ( Steininger et al. 1971).
