Revised description. Large, very solid, globose club-shaped shell with low cyrtoconoid, dome-shaped spire; apical angle ~115°. Protoconch unknown. Teleoconch of up to five whorls; surface with prominent, brownish calcitic layer. Spire whorls weakly convex with weak shoulder placed short distance above suture. Suture narrowly incised, undulating. Axial sculpture of about ten low, broad ribs, indistinctly tuberculose at shoulder, fading over very wide subsutural ramp. Spiral sculpture of about nine subequal spiral cords including adis, IP, abis, P1, s1, P2 and tertiary cords or threads (visible on penultimate whorl). P2 slightly more prominent, forming periphery close above abapical suture. Last whorl attaining ~85% of total height. Broad, weakly convex to weakly concave subsutural ramp, rounded shoulder, convex below, strongly constricted at base. Axial sculpture of seven to ten broad, poorly defined ribs. Spiral cords on subsutural ramp obscured by close set growth lines forming densely scabrose sculpture. P1–P6 and secondary cords (s2 and s3) forming broad, low, rather indistinct cords, crossed by scabrose growth lines. P4 and P5 slightly more prominent. ADP and MP on siphonal canal. Fasciole swollen, delimiting broad pseudoumbilicus. Aperture wide, ovate; outer lip thickened, with weakly crenulated edge, smooth within. Anal canal broad, moderately incised. Siphonal canal moderately short, narrow, closed in fully grown specimens, slightly deflected to the left. Columella broadly excavated, smooth. Columellar callus forming broad thick rim, erect over siphonal canal, adherent in parietal area.
Discussion. This species is unique due to its very solid, globose, club-shaped shell and smooth outer lip. It is known so far only from Grund ( Austria). It resembles Kestocenebra subaustriaca ( Stojaspal, 1978) in its cyrtoconoid early spire, the thick shell structure, the thick calcitic surface layer, the squamose sculpture on the subsutural ramp and the P2 prominent along shoulder on the spire. In particular the early spire of both species is almost identical. Kestocenebra? globosa ( Stojaspal, 1978) lacks varices and the few available specimens lack the labral tooth on P4 typical for the genus. Therefore, generic placement is tentative at best.
Paleoenvironment. At the locality Grund channels formed in middle to outer neritic environments and were filled, with allochthonous assemblages uniting coastal-mudflat faunas with inner neritic ones ( Zuschin et al. 2005; Roetzel 2009).
Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): North Alpine-Carpathian Foreland Basin: Grund ( Austria) (Hoernes & Auinger 1885).
Genus Ocenebra J.E. Gray, 1847
Type species. Murex erinaceus Linnaeus, 1758 View in CoL ; by monotypy. Present-day, Mediterranean Sea.
Comments. For their molecular phylogeny, Russini et al. (2023) studied ten species of Ocenebra including the type species and three species of Ocinebrina including the type species ( Murex corallinus Scacchi, 1836 ). The resulting tree ( Russini et al. 2023: 861, fig. 1) Shows Ocinebrina nested within the Ocenebra clade, and does not support reciprocal monophyly of the two genera. Thus, it is difficult to place fossil species. In addition, Crocetta et al. (2020) included in Ocenebra species with shells quite different from the type species, such as O. piantonii ( Cecalupo, Buzzurro, and Mariani, 2008) or O. edwardsii ( Payraudeau, 1826) . Like the type species, species placed herein in this genus are trivaricate, have a strong P1, develop internal denticles D1 to D5 and have a sealed siphonal canal.
