Type material. Holotype: NHMW 1851/0013/0026, SL: 26.0 mm, MD: 14.1 mm, Bad Vöslau ( Austria), illustrated in Hörnes (1853: pl. 25, fig. 4), lectotype (designated herein) of Murex ( Occenebra [sic]) imbricatoides Hoernes & Auinger, 1885 , Figs 45A View FIGURE 45 1 –A View FIGURE 1 3 View FIGURE 3 .

Revised description. Medium-sized, moderately slender fusiform shell with high spire; apical angle 51°. Protoconch unknown.Teleoconch of up to six whorls. Suture moderately incised, deeply undulating. Early teleoconch whorls convex with weakly concave subsutural ramp and rounded shoulder. Axial sculpture of eight prominent, widely spaced, convex, weakly prosocline ribs. Spiral sculpture of adis, IP, abis, P1, P2, s1, s2 of subequal strength and delicate tertiary threads on antepenultimate and penultimate whorls. Last whorl attaining 67% of total height, with weakly concave subsutural ramp and strongly convex periphery, strongly constricted at base. Eight broad, prominent axial ribs with wide interspaces overrun by dense spiral sculpture of adis, IP, abis, P1–P6, s1–s5, s6 on siphonal canal, ms occasional, ADP, MP, ABP of subequal strength. One delicate, weakly scabrose tertiary thread in interspaces. Fasciole weakly swollen, delimiting shallow, moderately broad pseudumbilicus. Aperture ovate; outer lip thickened by terminal varix. Very weak ID, prominent D1–D6 starting close behind peristome. Anal canal wide, poorly delimited; siphonal canal moderately long, narrow, fused, weakly bent to the left. Columella weakly excavated, smooth, slightly twisted at siphonal canal. Columellar callus forming broad rim, sharply delimited, weakly erect at siphonal canal, adherent in parietal area.

Paratethyan synonyms. De Gregorio (1885a) introduced Murex craticulatus billus for the specimen illustrated by Hörnes (1853: pl. 25, fig. 4). Hoernes & Auinger (1885) described

Murex ( Occenebra [sic]) imbricatoides based on 26 syntypes from various localities including the specimen illustrated by Hörnes (1853). In our opinion, these syntypes are not conspecific and include specimens of various Ocinebrina species. Moreover, not all specimens mentioned by Hoernes &Auinger (1885) can be reliably identified. Therefore, we designate the specimen illustrated by Hörnes (1853) as lectotype of Murex ( Occenebra [sic]) imbricatoides , which thus becomes an objective junior synonym of Ocinebrina billus (De Gregorio, 1885a) .

Discussion. Ocinebrina billus (De Gregorio, 1885a) is a rare and poorly known species, which differs from other Paratethyan Ocenebrinae by its high spire, globose last whorl and strongly undulating suture. It was originally identified by Hörnes (1853) as the Pliocene Mediterranean Ocinebrina imbricata ( Brocchi, 1814) but differs from this species distinctly in its more delicate sculpture, higher spire, slenderer shape and narrower aperture (see Landau et al. 2007: 33 for O. imbricata ). Ocinebrina funiculosa ( Borson, 1821) sensu Sacco (1904: 23 , pl. 6, fig. 26), from the Pliocene of Italy, differs in its larger size and longer siphonal canal. Ocinebrina subacingulata Sacco, 1904 , from the Pliocene of Italy, differs in its shorter spire (see Sacco 1904: 23, pl. 6, fig. 28). Ocinebrina concerpta ( Bellardi,1873) , from the Mediterranean Pliocene, is another similar species but differs in its much stronger peribasal cord (see Landau et al. 2007: pl. 8, fig. 4).

Ocinebrina billus is reminiscent of some species of the Aspellinae genus Attiliosa Emerson, 1968 but is distinguished from that genus by its fused siphonal canal.

Paleoenvironment. Unknown.

Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): Vienna Basin: Bad Vöslau ( Austria) (hoc opus).
