Type locality. Mikulov ( Czech Republic), Vienna Basin .

Type stratum. Baden Formation.

Age. Middle Miocene, middle Badenian (Langhian).

Etymology. Referring to the assumed phylogenetic relation with the Pliocene? Ocinebrina scalaris ( Brocchi, 1814) .

Diagnosis. Medium-sized, moderately slender fusiform shell with high spire and convex, strongly constricted last whorl with rounded shoulder; sculpture of prominent primary cords and slightly weaker secondary cords; outer lip with nine short lirae and weak ID.

Description. Medium-sized, moderately slender fusiform shell with high spire; apical angle ~48°. Protoconch unknown. Teleoconch of up to five whorls. Suture moderately incised, shallowly undulating. Early teleoconch whorls convex with weakly concave, scabrose subsutural ramp and faint, rounded shoulder. Axial sculpture of nine broad, prominent ribs overrun by subequal adis, IP, abis, P1–P3 and slightly weaker s1–s2. Last whorl attaining ~70–72% of total height; weakly concave subsutural ramp, rounded shoulder, convex below, rapidly contracting below. Sculpture of about ten broad axial ribs, being most prominent along periphery, fading over base. Axial ribs overrun by scabrose adis, IP, abis separated by narrow interspaces; adis amalgamating with narrow subsutural cord. P1 slightly more prominent along shoulder; P2–P6 forming broad, rounded cords; s1–s3 slightly weaker, recessed; cords separated by narrow interspaces. Fasciole swollen, twisted, delimiting broad pseudoumbilicus.Aperture ovate; outer lip thickened with weak ID and nine short, prominent lirae starting close behind peristome. Anal canal weakly incised; siphonal canal long, fused in fully grown specimens, straight. Columella straight to broadly excavated, smooth, twisted at siphonal canal. Columellar callus forming broad, sharply delimited rim, erect at siphonal canal.

Discussion. Since Hörnes (1853), the Paratethyan species has been confused with the Pliocene Mediterranean Ocinebrina scalaris ( Brocchi, 1814) . Although both species might be related, O. scalaris differs in its strongly convex last whorl and the coarser, less numerous denticles within the outer lip (see Ruggieri et al. 1959: pl. 8, fig. 43; Malatesta 1974: pl. 24, fig. 5; Pinna & Spezia 1978: pl. 42, figs 1–1a; Chirli 2000: pl. 16, figs 12–16; Landau et al. 2007: pl. 9, figs 4–6).

Paleoenvironment. Shallow marine, inner neritic.

Distribution in Central Paratethys. Karpatian (Early Miocene): Korneuburg Basin: Kleinebersdorf ( Austria) (Harzhauser 2002). Badenian (Middle Miocene): Vienna Basin: Bad Vöslau ( Austria), Mikulov ( Czech Republic) (hoc opus).
