Type material. Lectotype designated by Švagrovský (1982: 387) illustrated in Eichwald (1852: pl. 8, fig. 11); SL: 20.6 mm, MD: 10.1 mm (according to illustrations in Eichwald (1851, 1852), Biłka or Żukowce (Zhukivtsi) ( Ukraine). The specimen could not be reliably identified in the St. Petersburg State University, Paleontological Museum ( Russia) ( Fig. 28D View FIGURE 28 ).
Holotype of Murex confluens convexus Friedberg, 1912: Nr. 3610, State Natural History Museum, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, L’viv), SL: 19.2 mm, MD: 9.2 mm, Zborów (Zboriv) ( Ukraine), illustrated in Friedberg (1912: pl. 10, fig. 8), Fig. 28E View FIGURE 28 ).
The three syntypes of Murex galicianus Hilber, 1882 were stored in the Geological Survey in Vienna but were destroyed during WWII .
Illustrated material. Collection of Zoltán Kovács, SL: 19 mm, MD: 10 mm, Hidas ( Hungary), illustrated in Kovács 2020: 456, pl. 2, figs 24–25; Figs 28C View FIGURE 28 1 –C View FIGURE 1 2 View FIGURE 2 .
Revised description. Small, broadly fusiform shell with high, gradate spire; apical angle ~55°. Protoconch unknown. Teleoconch of up to six whorls; suture deeply incised, shallowly undulating. Early teleoconch whorls with shallow, weakly concave subsutural ramp and shoulder placed slightly above mid-whorl. Axial sculpture of about eight prominent ribs overrun by delicate adis, IP, abis, slightly more prominent P1 along shoulder, subequal P2 and delicate s1 and s2; P3 appears at abapical suture on third teleoconch whorl. Last whorl attaining ~70% of total height; slightly allometrically widening with broad, shallow subsutural ramp, marked shoulder, weakly convex periphery, moderately constricted below. Axial sculpture of three broad varices and up to two weaker intervarical ribs. Spiral sculpture of prominent P1–P5 on convex part of whorl; P6 atrophied on the siphonal canal; on subsutural ramp adis, IP, adis weak, ADP, MP, ABP weak; s1–s6, ads delicate, recessed, adjoined by tertiary thread on either side. Fasciole swollen, twisted, delimiting deep, moderately narrow pseudoumbilicus. Aperture narrow, elongate ovate; outer lip strongly thickened, nearly straight-sided, with very prominent D1–D5. Anal canal weakly incised; siphonal canal moderately long, fused in adult specimens, slightly bent to the left. Columella straight, smooth. Columellar callus forming broad, sharply delimited rim, erect at siphonal canal, adherent in parietal area.
Paratethyan synonyms. Hilber (1882) illustrated two syntypes of Murex galicianus Hilber, 1882 from Hołubica ( Ukraine). The specimen illustrated on pl. 1, fig. 7 is indistinguishable from Ocenebra confluens ( Eichwald, 1830) , whereas fig. 8 represents Orania agapus . As first revisers we select the specimen illustrated by Hilber (1882: pl. 1, fig. 7) as lectotype of Murex galicianus, which makes this species a subjective synonym of Ocenebra confluens ( Eichwald, 1830) . The material described by Hilber (1882) was stored in the collection of the Geological Survey in Vienna (now Geosphere Austria) but was destroyed during World War II. Ocinebrina confluens convexa ( Friedberg, 1912) is based on a single poorly preserved specimen that differs from typical Ocenebra confluens ( Eichwald, 1830) by its convex periphery. Further material would be needed to evaluate the status of this taxon. Herein, we tentatively treat it a subjective junior synonym of O. confluens , with which it co-occurs.
Discussion. Ocenebra schoenni (Hörnes, 1853) has an identical shape and very similar apertural features like Ocenebra confluens . However, they differ mainly in the cancellate sculpture of Ocenebra schoenni .
Occurrences in the Eastern Paratethys described by Nevesskaya et al. (1986) from the Konkian (Middle Miocene) of Kazakhstan differ in their cancellate sculpture and are closer to Ocenebra schoenni (Hörnes, 1853) . The two specimens illustrated by Nevesskaya et al. (1986) lack apertural features and their definitive identification is impossible .
Paleoenvironment. Shallow marine, inner neritic.
Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): Korytnica Basin: Korytnica ( Bałuk 1995); Nowy Sącz Basin: Niskowa ( Poland) ( Bałuk 1970); Polish-Ukrainian Fore-Carpathian Basin: Biłka, Hołdy, Jasinów, Olesko, Płuhów, Zborów (Zboriv), Żukowce (Zhukivtsi) ( Ukraine) ( Eichwald 1830; Friedberg 1912, 1938); Voronyaky Hills: Hołubica (Holubytsia), Podhorce (Pidhirtsi) ( Ukraine) ( Friedberg 1912); Pannonian Basin: Hidas ( Hungary) ( Kovács 2020); Bükk Mountains: Borsodbóta ( Hungary) ( Csepreghy-Meznerics 1972).
