Revised description. Small to medium-sized, broad biconic shell with gradate spire, apical angle ~58°. Protoconch pointed, of 1.5 smooth, convex whorls with elevated nucleus. Teleoconch of up to six whorls. Suture moderately incised. Early teleoconch whorls with shallow subsutural ramp, rounded shoulder, subcylindrical below. Axial sculpture of about nine widely spaced, narrow, lamellar varices, forming very short spines along shoulder. Spiral sculpture: first whorl, indistinct cords; second whorl, P1 cord poorly distinct, P1 spine distinct; third whorl, appearance of poorly distinct P2 cord; fourth and fifth poorly distinct P3 above the adapical suture. Last whorl attaining ~70–72% of total height, with broad, shallow, flattened subsutural ramp, angled shoulder, subcylindrical to weakly convex below, strongly constricted at base; up to seven lamellar varices; terminal varix slightly flaring, P1 forming short, adapically curved spines along shoulder. P1, P3, P4, P5 slightly more prominent, P2 atrophied; secondary cords subobsolete, except for weak s2; fasciole weakly swollen, delimiting moderately wide pseudoumbilicus. Aperture moderately wide, ovate-subtrigonal; outer lip thickened, flared in basal area, strongly constricted at siphonal canal, with everted edge; P1 developing long, trigonal spine at shoulder, with groove extending from inner edge of outer lip to P1; prominent D1–D6 at inner edge of lip, D1 stronger. Siphonal canal moderately long, moderately wide, open, straight or slightly deflected to the left, weakly dorsally recurved. Columella smooth, moderately excavated in adapical part, twisted at transition to siphonal canal. Columellar callus forming broad, adherent rim, parietal denticle broad, low or absent, no anal denticle.

Discussion. Bellardi (1873) separated his Murex citimus , from the Burdigalian of Baldissero ( Italy), from Flexopteron goniostoma (Hörnes, 1853) based mainly on its broader shell, lower spire and on the shorter spine on P1. These features, however, are variable in Flexopteron goniostoma and do not allow a reliable distinction. The syntype of Flexopteron citima illustrated in Ferrero Mortara et al. (1981: 37, pl. 2, figs 6a–b) is almost indistinguishable from the Paratethyan specimens except for the more prominent primary cords and subequal secondary cords on the terminal varix. We are not aware of any other specimens of F. citima and its variability is unclear. Provisionally, we keep both species as valid but note that F. goniostoma would have priority over F. citima . The specimen from the Chattian of Saint-Etienn-d’Orthe ( France), illustrated by Lozouet (2023, pl. 15, figs 1–3) and attributed by that author to Flexopteron cf. goniostoma , differs from Flexopteron goniostoma in its multispiral protoconch and represents a yet undescribed species.

Paleoenvironment. Shallow marine, inner neritic.

Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): Carpathian Foreland Basin: Hrušovany nad Jevišovkou ( Czech Republic) (hoc opus); Vienna Basin: Bad Vöslau, Baden, Gainfarn, Möllersdorf, Niederleis ( Austria) Porzteich at Břeclav ( Czech Republic) (Hoernes &Auinger 1885); Bükk Mountains: Borsodbóta ( Hungary) ( Csepreghy-Meznerics 1972); Pannonian Basin: Letkés, Szob, Tekeres ( Hungary) ( Strausz 1966; Kovács et al. 2018, Kovács & Vicián 2024); Southern Carpathians: between Dubova and Pojejena ( Romania) ( Stancu et al. 1971); Făget Basin: Coşteiu de Sus, Lăpugiu de Sus ( Romania) (Hoernes & Auinger 1885; Kovács 2019); Dacian Basin: Bozuritsa, Opanec, Staropatica, Târnene ( Bulgaria) (Kojumdgieva in Kojumdgieva & Strachimirov 1960).
