Revised description. Medium-sized, solid, stocky fusiform shell; apical angle ~65°. Protoconch unknown. Teleoconch of up to six whorls. Suture moderately incised, shallowly undulating. Early teleoconch whorls low, with convex subsutural ramp, marked shoulder, slightly incised below. Axial sculpture of 10 to 11 prominent ribs, separated by interspaces of equal width. On antepenultimate and penultimate whorls, IP prominent, adis, abis weaker, P1 along shoulder most prominent. Last whorl attaining 72–75%, with broad subsutural ramp. Axial sculpture of about eight varices and intervarical ribs of equal strength; varices offset by ~10–15° between whorls. Subsutural ramp with numerous narrow spiral threads of subequal strength; IP slightly more prominent; adis, abis poorly distinct; P1, P3, P4 very prominent, occasionally with indistinct tubercles developed at varices; P2 atrophied; secondary cords (s1 to s5, ads) adjoined by one tertiary thread on either side; secondary cords and tertiary threads weakly scabrose; P5–P6, ADP, MP weak. Fasciole very prominent, delimiting broad pseudoumbilicus. Aperture wide, ovate. Outer lip slightly flaring, with weakly crenulate edge, weakly incised at P1, with subobsolete ID, blunt D1–D4, D3 to D5 may be split on ( Fig. 63C View FIGURE 63 ). Anal canal very broad, weakly incised, accentuated by indistinct ID. Siphonal canal moderately short, narrow, open or fused, straight, dorsally recurved. Columella strongly excavated in adapical part, twisted at transition to siphonal canal. Columellar callus forming broad, thickened, adherent rim, erect at transition to siphonal canal.

Discussion. Pterynotus (Pterymarchia) sandbergeri (Hörnes, 1856) is the only representative of this subgenus in the Paratethys and the Proto-Mediterranean Sea. It might stem from Oligocene and Early Miocene species in the eastern Atlantic, described by Merle et al. (2024) as Pterynotus (P.) gaasensis Merle, Pacaud, Ledon & Goret, 2024 or P. (P.) pelouatensis Merle, Pacaud, Ledon & Goret, 2024. Both species differ from P. (P.) sandbergeri in their weaker spiral sculpture, the more prominent P2, the rounded shoulder and the less constricted last whorl. The development of the spiral cords was discussed by Merle et al. (2024: figs 18I–J) and is adopted herein.

Paleoenvironment. Shallow marine, inner neritic.

Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): Korytnica Basin: Korytnica ( Bałuk 1995); Vienna Basin: Gainfarn, Steinebrunn ( Austria) (Hoernes & Auinger 1885); Eisenstadt-Sopron Basin: Forchtenau ( Austria) (Hoernes & Auinger 1885); Pannonian Basin: Letkés ( Hungary) ( Kovács et al. 2018); Mecsek Mountains: Mecsekpölöske ( Hungary) ( Kovács 2020); Făget Basin: Coşteiu de Sus, Lăpugiu de Sus ( Romania) ( Kovács 2019).

Proto-Mediterranean Sea. Serravallian (Middle Miocene): Karaman Basin: Lale, Akpınar, Seyithasan

( Turkey) ( Landau et al. 2013).
