Description. See Houart (2001: 113) and Landau et al. (2007). Lozouet (2023: 49) documented the presence of two Typhinellus species in the Oligocene and Miocene of Europe. The Oligocene and Early Miocene Typhinellus protetrapterus (Sacco, 1894) has a multispiral protoconch wheras Middle and Late Miocene shells of Typhinellus labiatus have a non-planctotrophic protoconch. A separation of both species without protoconchs is difficult and therefore, the identification of the Paratethyan specimens remains somewhat doubtful.
Paratethyan synonyms. Typhis tetrapterus arbilpus De Gregorio, 1885a was established by De Gregorio (1885a) for the specimen illustrated in Hörnes (1853: pl. 26, fig. 10).
Discussion. A very characteristic species, which cannot be confused with any other Paratethyan Muricidae . Caribbean Miocene to present-day specimens identified in the literature as Typhinellus labiatus were described by Houart (2015) as Typhinellus jacolombi Houart, 2015 . The Caribbean species differs from T. labiatus in its smaller and narrower shell. Typhinellus labiatus has a less broad and less expanded apertural wing abapically and a more constricted last teleoconch whorl (see Ceulemans et al. 2016 for further discussion).
Paleoenvironment. Living specimens occur in 0.5 to 110 m water depth on corals, rocks and rocky sand ( Houart 2001; Gertman 1969). Paratethyan occurrences document also a range from inner neritic to outer neritic environments.
Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): Korytnica Basin: Korytnica ( Bałuk 1995); Vienna Basin: Baden, Bad Vöslau, Gainfarn, Steinebrunn, Enzesfeld ( Austria) (Hoernes & Auinger 1885); Eisenstadt-Sopron Basin: Forchtenau ( Austria) (Hoernes & Auinger 1885); Pannonian Basin: Letkés, Hidas, Szob ( Hungary) ( Strausz 1966; Kovács et al. 2018); Bakony Mountains: Bánd ( Hungary) ( Kovács 2020); Mecsek Mountains: Mecsekpölöske ( Hungary) ( Kovács 2020); Făget Basin: Buituri, Coşteiu de Sus, Lăpugiu de Sus ( Romania) (Hoernes & Auinger 1885; Boettger 1906; Kovács 2019).
(Proto-)Mediterranean Sea. Serravallian (Middle Miocene): Karaman Basin: Akpınar, Lale, Tilkikaya, Seyithasan, ( Turkey) ( Landau et al. 2013). Pliocene: Spain ( Landau et al. 2007), Italy ( Sacco 1904; Chirli 2000), Tunisia ( Fekih 1975). Pleistocene: Italy ( Cerulli-Irelli 1911).
Northeastern Atlantic. Langhian (Middle Miocene): Loire Basin: Bossée, Ferrière-Larçon, Genneteil, Paulmy, Pontlevoy, Sainte-Catherine de Fierbois ( France) ( Glibert 1952a); Tortonian (Late Miocene): Loire Basin: St-Clément-de-la-Place, Sceaux-d’Anjou, Renauleau ( France) (Landau et al. 2019). Pliocene: Loire Basin: Le Pigeon Blanc, Le Landreau ( France) (Ceulemans et al. 2016).
Present-day. eastern Atlantic from southern Spain to Morocco, Mediterranean Sea, Somalia, Oman ( Landau et al. 2007).
