Revised description. Medium-sized, robust pyriform shell, with gradate spire; apical angle ~70°. Protoconch unknown. Teleoconch of up to four or five whorls. Suture deeply incised, linear, partly obscured by the elevated buttress-like ribs over the subsutural ramp. Early teleoconch whorls with convex subsutural ramp; shoulder placed short distance above suture. Axial sculpture of 11 broad, low, lamellar axial ribs. Spiral sculpture of very prominent P1 along shoulder; IP, adis and abis missing; P1 spine short, wide. Last whorl attaining ~80% of total height; with broad, shallow subsutural ramp, angled shoulder, moderately convex below, strongly constricted. Axial sculpture of up to eight strongly raised, narrowly triangular varices, crossing suture and fading on penultimate whorl. Spiral sculpture largely reduced with low primary cords P1 to P5 and subobsolete P6 and ADP. Fasciole moderately swollen, delimiting shallow pseudoumbilicus. Aperture wide, ovate; outer lip slightly thickened, smooth within. Anal canal variable indistinct; siphonal canal long, straight, open. Columella straight, slightly twisted at siphonal canal. Columellar callus forming broad adherent rim [apertural features are partly based on specimens illustrated by Hölzl (1958: pl. 20, figs 4–5)].
Paratethyan synonyms. Two names have been established for specimens from the Eggenburgian of Austria: Murex (Trophon) capito algortis De Gregorio 1885b was introduced for those illustrated in Hörnes (1853: pl. 23, fig. 10) and Murex (Trophon) deshayesii permagna Schaffer, 1912, which is an objective junior synonym of Murex (Trophon) capito algortis . The third Paratethyan synonym is Murex (Muricantha) deshayesi ventricosus Hölzl, 1958 , introduced for a juvenile specimen from Bavaria. This name is preoccupied by Murex ventricosus Molina, 1810 . No replacement name is needed as we consider it to be a subjective synonym of Crassimurex (Eopaziella) algortis (De Gregorio, 1885a) .
Discussion. This species has been confused with Crassimurex (Eopaziella) capito ( Philippi, 1844) from the Late Eocene to Late Oligocene of the North Sea Basin. Crassimurex (Eopaziella) algortis ( De Gregorio, 1885b) differs from the Oligocene species in the much larger size, gradate spire and strongly raised varices (see Tembrock 1963; pl. 2, fig. 5, pl. 3, figs 6–7, p. 5, figs 8–9, pl. 6, figs 2–4; Merle et al. 2011: pl. 144, figs 1–4). Crassimurex (Eopaziella) deshayesi ( Nyst, 1836) , from the Oligocene of the North Sea Basin, differs in its higher, conical spire and more numerous, less prominent varices (see Tembrock 1963; pl. 2, fig. 6, pl. 3, figs 4–5, pl. 5, fig. 7, pl. 6, fig. 1; Merle et al. 2011: pl. 144, figs 5–8). Both Oligocene species also occurred in the Central Paratethys during the Egerian, when the Paratethys shared several species in common with the North Sea ( Báldi 1973; Kovács & Vicián 2016). The occurrence of an Oligocene North Sea species in the Eggenburgian of the Central Paratethys, however, would be surprising. Therefore, we assume that C. (E.) algortis is an Early Miocene offshoot of the Egerian populations of C. (E.) capito . At that time, Crassimurex (Eopaziella) was already extinct in the North Sea.
Paleoenvironment. Occurrences in the Eggenburgian Loibersdorf Formation, represent shallow marine, inner neritic environments (Mandic et al. 2004).
Distribution in Central Paratethys. Eggenburgian (Early Miocene): North Alpine Foreland Basin: Hausham, Kaltenbachgraben, Thalberggraben, Bad Tölz ( Germany) ( Hölzl 1958); Loibersdorf, Gauderndorf ( Austria) ( Steininger et al. 1971).
