Description. Medium sized, fusiform shell with conical spire; apical angle ~52°. Protoconch unknown. Teleoconch of up to six whorls. Early teleoconch whorls with weakly convex subsutural ramp, weak mid-whorl angulation, slightly constricted below. Axial sculpture of about ten, trigonal ribs. No spiral sculpture. Short P1 spines present on the early whorls. Later teleoconch whorls with broad, weakly concave subsutural ramp; weakly laminar varices forming indistinct, open spines along shoulder. Last whorl attaining ~70% of total height, with broad subsutural ramp, angled to slightly rounded shoulder, weakly convex below, abruptly constricted at base. About ten laminar varices, P1 forming short triangular spines along shoulder; fasciole weak, separated by narrow chink from siphonal canal. P2, P3 and P4 obsolete. Aperture pyriform; outer lip smooth or with five weak denticles placed some distance behind peristome and corresponding to D1 to D4 (D2 bifid); anal canal subobsolete; siphonal canal long, moderately narrow, slightly deflected to the left, shallowly notched. Columella moderately to weakly excavated, twisted at siphonal fasciole. Columellar callus forming narrow adherent rim, poorly delimited from base.
Discussion. The Paratethyan Pagodula perditus ( De Gregorio 1885b) was identified by most authors as Pagodula varicosissima ( Michelotti, 1841) from the Tortonian of Tortona ( Italy). Michelotti (1841) depicted a small biconic shell with an apical angle of about 55°, a steep, broad subsutural ramp and the shoulder placed close above the abapical suture. The type specimen of Pagodula varicosissima seems to have been already lost in the 19 th century because Bellardi (1873) and Sacco (1904) did not re-illustrate the specimen. Pagodula varicosissima from the Tortonian of S. Agata and Montegibbio ( Italy), illustrated by Sacco (1904: pl. 7, figs 16–17) and Montanaro (1935: pl. 4, figs 8–9), differs distinctly in its slenderer shape and much higher spire. Thus, the status of Pagodula varicosissima is unclear. Michelotti’s Pagodula varicosissima differs from Pagodula perditus in its biconic outline and lacks the subcylindrical part of the last whorl of P. perditus . Pagodula varicosissima sensu Sacco (1904) and Montanaro (1935) is clearly much slenderer. Note that the specimen from the Tortonian of Stazzano ( Italy) illustrated by Caprotti (2011: figs 6Q–R) is a turrid ( Brunetti et al. 2012).
Pagodula perditus differs from Pagodula spinifera ( Csepreghy-Meznerics, 1969) in its stockier shape, less gradate spire, more convex last whorl, much weaker spines and broader siphonal canal.
Paleoenvironment. Middle to outer neritic, marine environments.
Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): Voronyaky Hills: Hołubica (Holubytsia) ( Ukraine) (Hoernes & Auinger 1885); Carpathian Foreland Basin: Rudice ( Czech Republic) (Hoernes & Auinger 1885); Vienna Basin: Baden, Baden Sooss, Bad Vöslau, Enzesfeld, Steinebrunn ( Austria) (Hoernes & Auinger 1885); Eisenstadt-Sopron Basin: Sopron ( Hungary) ( Strausz 1966).
