Revised description. Large, solid, fusiform, trivaricate shell with low spire; apical angle 70°. Protoconch unknown. Teleoconch of up to five whorls. Suture moderately incised, moderately undulating. Early teleoconch whorl with broad, almost straight-sided subsutural ramp; shoulder placed below mid-whorl. Sculpture of three prominent varices with short open spines developed on shoulder, and one very weak intervarical rib. Spiral sculpture weak. Several delicate cords on subsutural ramp separated by narrow interspaces; P1 more prominent. Last whorl attaining 78% of total height; broad moderately steep subsutural ramp, distinct shoulder, moderately convex periphery, strongly constricted below. Sculpture of three wide, weakly foliaceous varices with indistinct intervarical rib. Spiral sculpture on subsutural ramp of nine subequal cords, comprising adis, IP, abis and tertiary cords. Primary cords narrow, widely spaced; P1, P2, P6, ADP, MP and ABP weak, P3, P5 slightly more prominent. P5 marking slight basal angulation. Secondary cords s1–s2 delicate, adjoined by granulose tertiary threads on either side. About five threads in interspaces between ADP, MP and ABP. Fasciole narrow, delimiting very broad, shallow pseudoumbilicus. Aperture small, ovate; outer lip strongly thickened, smooth within.Anal canal indistinct; siphonal canal very long, fused throughout, weakly bent to the right. Columella moderately excavated, smooth. Columellar callus forming broad, sharply delimited, weakly erect rim.
Discussion. This species was placed in Jaton by Landau et al. (2007: 37) and Merle et al. (2011: 143), which is followed herein. Jaton sowerbyi ( Michelotti, 1841) , which is another Jaton species occurring in the Paratethys Sea, differs in its higher spire, deeply incised suture, larger aperture and shorter siphonal canal. Jaton dufrenoyi ( Grateloup, 1845) , from the Burdigalian of Saucats and Saint-Paul-lès-Dax in the northeastern Atlantic and the Langhian of Montpeyroux ( France) in the Proto-Mediterranean Sea, differs in its higher spire and the much more prominent and broader primary cords (see Cossmann & Peyrot 1924; pl. 13, figs 29–30; Goret & Pons 2013: text-fig. 8, pl. 4, figs 4–6).
Paleoenvironment. Shallow marine, inner neritic. The occurrence at Gainfarn might suggest a preference for seagrass environments (Zuschin et al. 2009).
Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): Vienna Basin: Gainfarn, ( Austria) (Hoernes & Auinger 1885); Pannonian Basin: Letkés ( Hungary) ( Strausz 1966).
