Type material. Syntype or holotype, illustrated in Michelotti (1841: pl. 1, figs 14–15), Colli Torinesi ( Italy) without locality, Burdigalian or Langhian. We are not aware of the whereabouts of the type material. Ferrero Mortara et al. (1981: 32) listed the specimen from the Early/Middle Miocene of the Colli Torinesi ( Italy) illustrated by Sacco (1904: pl. 4, figs 33–34) as BS.009.02.021, but this specimen is not a Jaton species but an Ocenebra and is surely not identical with the type specimen illustrated by Michelotti (1841).

Paratethyan synonyms. Four names were established for this species based on Paratethyan material: Murex orgellus De Gregorio, 1885a was introduced for the specimen illustrated in Hörnes (1853: pl. 25, fig. 14), Murex orgellus aspius De Gregorio 1885a for the specimen illustrated in Hörnes (1853: pl. 25, fig. 15) and Murex orgellus asgorus De Gregorio 1885a is based on the specimen illustrated in Hörnes (1853: pl. 25, fig. 16). In addition, Murex ( Chicoreus ) murex-ferreus Boettger, 1906 was based on material from Romania. All these species are considered herein as subjective synonyms of Jaton sowerbyi ( Michelotti, 1841) .

Paleoenvironment. Shallow marine, inner neritic.
