Revised description. Very large, slender fusiform, trivaricate shell; apical angle ~40–50°. Protoconch unknown. Teleoconch of up to seven teleoconch whorls. Suture moderately incised, shallowly undulating. Early teleoconch whorls convex with steep, convex subsutural ramp and weak shoulder. Axial sculpture of three sharp varices and up to two broad, weak intervarical ribs. Spiral sculpture subobsolete. P1 forming short, adapically curved spines along shoulder varix. IP and P2 only faintly developed on varices. Last whorl attaining ~70% of total height, moderately convex, with rounded shoulder, distinctly constricted below. Three flaring varices aligned axially along shell, slightly offset by ~23° between whorls. P1 forming short, broad spine; P2 reduced, P3 and P4 with shorter, less distinct spines. P5, P6, ADP and MP forming low, broad cords; s2–s4, s6 weak to subosolete. Aperture subtrigonal. Outer lip edge flared and everted with weak incision at shoulder-spine. Denticles reduced (D1–D3) to indistinct (D4–D6) swellings placed at inner edge of everted portion of outer lip. Anal canal indistinctly incised; siphonal canal very long, narrow, open, adapical portion slightly bent to the left, abapical portion curved to the right, weakly dorsally recurved. Columella weakly excavated in adapical part, smooth, twisted at siphonal canal. Columellar callus forming very broad, adherent rim.
Discussion. Most Paratethyan authors have identified this species as Murex tortuosus J. Sowerby, 1823 [= Pterynopsis binominatus (Staadt in Cossmann, 1909)] from the Pliocene North Sea Basin. However, the Paratethyan specimens differ in being somewhat smaller (maximum height 44 mm; fide Marquet, 1997, p. 88), higher spired and having spines developed at P1 and P3 on the terminal varix. Moreover, the siphonal canal is shorter and although also bent to the left, lacks the distal bend to the right seen in Pterynopsis badensis ( Nyst, 1881) . Pterynopsis subcontabulata (Millet, 1854) , from the Tortonian to Pleistocene of the northeastern Atlantic, is highly reminiscent of Pterynopsis badensis and differs mainly in its much smaller size (maximum height 27.2 mm; fide Ceulemans et al., 2016, p. 43), prominent denticles in the outer lip and the comparatively straighter siphonal canal (see Ceulemans et al. 2016: pl. 2, figs 2–4). For further discussion on European Pliocene congeners, see Ceulemans et al., 2016, p. 43).
Paleoenvironment. Known from inner neritic to outer neritic, marine environments.
Distribution in Central Paratethys.
