Revised description. Medium-sized, delicate, moderately slender fusiform, trivaricate shell; apical angle ~38– 48°. Protoconch conical of 2.5 whorls. Teleoconch of up to seven whorls. Suture moderately incised, shallowly undulating. Early teleoconch whorls convex, faintly shouldered; three winged varices starting on second teleoconch whorl. Varices straight or weakly prosocyrt in apical view. One weak intervarical rib forming blunt tubercle close above abapical suture. Spiral sculpture subosolete, but displaying P1, P2 and s1 on penultimate and last whorl. Varices aligned along shell axis, offset by about 7° between whorls. Last whorl attaining ~70% of total height, moderately convex, moderately constricted. Spiral sculpture weak; except for thin, narrow primary cords; P1–P6, ADP, MP and ABP all weak, of roughly equal strength, s1, s2 weaker. Fasciole well rounded, poorly delimited from base, smooth or bearing fine subobsolete cords. Aperture small, ovate; outer lip thickened, with groove extending from within aperture across lip to P1; weak ID, D1–D5 weakening abapically; D1 to D5 occasionally bifid: anal canal poorly delimited; siphonal canal long, narrow, open, bent to the right, weakly recurved. Columella broadly excavated, smooth. Columellar callus forming moderately broad rim, sharply delimited, weakly erect at siphonal canal, adherent in parietal area.
Paratethyan synonyms. Murex (Timbellus) swainsoni [sic] espitus was established by De Gregorio (1885a: 276) for the specimen illustrated in Hörnes (1853: pl. 25, fig. 13) as Murex swainsonii . Timbellus espitus is treated herein as subjective junior synonym of Timbellus latifolius .
Discussion. Paratethyan material of this species has been identified by most authors as the Late Miocene to Pliocene Mediterranean Timbellus swainsonii ( Michelotti, 1841) . Although similar, they can be distinguished by the distinct groove from inside the aperture to P1 on the terminal varix of Timbellus latifolius ( Bellardi, 1873) . Moreover, Timbellus swainsonii has a shorter spire and develops only 1.5 protoconch whorls instead of 2.5 in Timbellus latifolius (see Bellardi 1873: pl. 4, fig. 8; Ferrero Mortara et al. 1981: pl. 2, fig. 2; Landau et al. 2007 for Timbellus swainsonii ). Note that one of the other syntype specimens of Murex trinodosus Bellardi, 1873 , from the Pliocene of Savona ( Italy), was identified as Timbellus swainsonii by Landau et al. (2007: 17), which is followed herein. This specimen (BS.009.02.019) was illustrated in Ferrero Mortara et al. (1981: pl. 2, fig. 2).
A specimen identified by Kojumdgieva in Kojumdgieva & Strachimirov (1960) as Murex (Pteropurpura) swainsoni [sic] might belong here, but the preservation is too poor for clear identification. Timbellus weinmannae sp. nov. differs in its much larger size and slenderer shape.
Paleoenvironment. The occurrences in the Baden Formation of the Vienna Basin suggest middle to outer neritic, marine environments in up to 250 m water depth ( Kranner et al. 2021).
Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): Vienna Basin: Bad Vöslau, Baden, Baden-Sooss, Möllersdorf, Vienna /Grinzing ( Austria), Jaroměřice nad Rokytnou ( Czech Republic) (Hoernes & Auinger 1885); Făget Basin: Coşteiu de sus, Lăpugiu de Sus ( Romania) ( Boettger 1902);? Dacian Basin: Staropatica ( Bulgaria) (Kojumdgieva in Kojumdgieva & Strachimirov 1960).
Proto-Mediterranean Sea. Burdigalian (Early Miocene): Colli Torinesi: Baldissero ( Italy) ( Bellardi 1873).
