Holotype (BMNH [D. Mann, pers. comm.; examined]); type locality: unknown .
Original rank: species. Current rank and status: synonym of S. alternans Leach, 1815 ( Kraepelin 1903, Brölemann 1909, Attems 1930, Bücherl 1942 a, Shelley 2002); I confirm this synonymy.
Remarks: The name has been spelled “ grayii,” but the correct orthography is “ grayi .” It was omitted by Bücherl (1974).
