Holotype: not known to exist, not found in BMNH in 2005; type locality: St. Barthélemy, Lesser Antilles.
Original rank: species. Current rank and status: valid species ( Meinert 1886; Attems 1930; Bücherl 1942 a, 1974).
Anatomical illustrations: Koch (1863 b, pl. 77, fig. 158, pl. 78, figs. 159a–b).
Distribution: West Indies in general ( Attems 1930), though I do not know of a record from an island other than St. Barthélemy ( Bücherl 1942 a, 1974). Maps: none.
Remarks: Kraepelin (1903) and Brölemann (1909) regarded S. crudelis as a synonym of S. alternans Leach, 1815 .
