Holotype ( MHNG [P. Schwendinger, pers. comm.; examined]); type locality: Huitznopala , between Metztitlán & Tampico (spelled by Saussure (1860) as “Huitznopal, between Mextitlan and Tampico”), Hidalgo, Mexico .
Original rank: species. Current rank and status: subspecies of S. viridis Say, 1821 ( Kraepelin 1903, Shelley 2002).
Anatomical illustrations: Saussure (1860, pl. 7, figs. 45, 45c, p), Saussure & Humbert (1872, pl. 5, fig. 12).
Distribution : temperate regions of Mexico ( Saussure & Humbert 1872). Maps : none.
Remarks : Kraepelin (1903) and Attems (1930) considered maya to be “varieties” of S. viridis and S. v. viridis , respectively, but varieties in zoological nomenclature are equivalent to subspecies, and the Code does not recognize categories below this level. Therefore, a variety of a subspecies has no standing in nomenclature and is taxonomically invalid (see ensuing list). Scolopendra viridis maya was omitted by Bücherl (1942 a, 1974).
