multispinata Newport, 1844:98 View in CoL (1 February, Evenhuis (2003:15)).
Holotype (BMNH [D. Mann, pers. comm.; examined]); type locality: St. Kitts, Lesser Antilles.
Original rank: species. Current rank and status: synonym of S. alternans Leach, 1815 ( Kraepelin 1903; Brölemann 1909; Attems 1930; Bücherl 1939, 1942 a; Shelley 2002); I confirm this synonymy.
Remarks: Newport (1845) renamed this species as “ S. multispinosa , ” referencing his previous account of S. multispinata , and S. multispinosa has been cited in most subsequent works. However, the official name is the original one, multispinata , which was omitted by Bücherl (1974).
