Holotype (MNHP [J.J. Geoffroy, pers. comm; examined]); type locality: Colombia.
Original rank: species. Current rank and status: synonym of S. gigantea L., 1758 ( Kraepelin 1903; Brölemann 1909; Attems 1930; Bücherl 1939, 1942 a; Shelley & Kiser 2000).
Anatomical illustrations: Gervais (1859, pl. 5, figs. 1, 1a–b).
Remarks: Scolopendra insignis was omitted by Bücherl (1974). I was not able to obtain a copy of this paper, and the citation was kindly provided by A. Minelli and M. Uliana.
