Syntype (BMNH, 1 specimen [ Shelley 2002]); type locality: an unknown site in coastal Georgia or Florida, USA.
Original rank: species. Current rank and status: valid species ( Wood 1862, 1865; Kraepelin 1903; Attems 1930; Bücherl 1939, 1942 a, 1974; Shelley 2002).

Distribution: an irregular area in the southern US extending from southeastern North Carolina to southern Nevada and southward through Mexico and Central America to central Panama (Former Canal Zone); also occurring on the Pearl Islands ( Shelley 2002). Remarks: Scolopendra viridis Say, 1821 , is a senior primary homonym of S. laeta viridis Kraepelin, 1908 , occurring in Australia, which was placed in synonymy under S. laeta Haase, 1887 , by L. E. Koch (1982).
