viridicornis Newport, 1844:97 View in CoL (1 February, Evenhuis (2003:15)).
Holotype: (BMNH [D. Mann, pers. comm.; examined]); type locality: Brazil.
Original rank: species. Current rank and status: valid species ( Kraepelin 1903; Brölemann 1909; Attems 1930; Bücherl 1939, 1942 a, 1974; Schileyko 2002). Bücherl (1942 a) divided S. viridicornis into two subspecies that he ( Bücherl 1974) subsequently recognized; Schileyko (2002) recognized the nominate.
Anatomical illustrations: Newport (1845, pl. 33, figs. 1–2, 4–5; pl. 40, figs. 5–6), Attems (1930, figs. 58–59).
Distribution (of the nominate subspecies): Guyana, Surinam, Venezuela, Colombia (Medellin), Brazil (São Paulo, Mato Grosso, Guanabara, Rio de Janeiro, Espirito Santo, Bahia, Maranhão, Sergipe, Ceara, Amazonas, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Pará, Río Grande do Sul, Minas Gerais, Pernambuco, Alagoas, & Rondônia); Paraguay (Ascunsion, Capiata), Bolivia, & Argentina (Palmar, Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Jujuy, Salta, San Juan, San Luis, Santa Cruz, & Santiago del Estero) ( Brölemann 1902 a, b, 1903, 1909; Jeekel 1952; Coscáron 1955; Bücherl 1939, 1942 a, 1974; Schileyko 2002). Maps: none.
Remarks: Bücherl (1974) included Havana, Cuba, in the distribution of S. v. viridicornis , which is surely based on a misidentification of another species because the centipede has not been found on another Caribbean island. Likewise, Schileyko (2002) included the Antilles in general in the distribution, which does not warrant credence in the absence of records from specific islands; he also placed a question mark before Guyana that I remove because occurrence there is plausible with records from surrounding Venezuela, Surinam, and the adjoining states of Brazil.
