Holotype: not known to exist; type locality: California, USA.
Original rank: species. Current rank and status: synonym of S. polymorpha Wood, 1861 ( Kraepelin 1903; Attems 1930; Bücherl 1939, 1942 a; Shelley 2002).
Remarks: Wood (1862) did not designate a type specimen, but all his material was from California. Wood (1865) gave California as the locality and essentially reiterated his previous (1862) account, though spelling the name as “ copeana.”
