Diagnosis. Small compact spiders in which males resemble P. yambuna sp. nov. in the coiled embolus, and smooth carapace margin, and differ in that P. yambuna sp. nov. has a small triangular paracymbial spine ( Fig. 110h View FIGURE 110 ) rather than the long curved spine in P. lugubris sp. nov. Females of the two species differ in abdominal patterns.
Etymology. The species epithet alludes to the dark colour of the spiders,
Description Holotype male AM KS11430
Carapace 2.12 long, 1.32 wide. Abdomen 2.24 long, 1.12 wide. Total length 4.4.
Colour: carapace dark red brown; femora I and II brown, patellae–tarsi I and II yellowish; femora III and IV brown with yellowish stripes laterally, patellae dirty yellow, tibiae distally darker, metatarsi and tarsi orange brown. Coxa I red brown, rest yellow, around red brown sternum; abdomen dorsally with black scute for 0.8 of length with medial transverse constriction and narrow band of white hair anteriorly, medially and distally on scute. Carapace: margin a smooth ledge, cuticle lightly reticulate; long fovea extends partially onto posterior slope; fine cover of hairs around eyes. Chelicerae: with pair of medially directed bristles anteriorly. Sternum: low, domed; with coxae, pustulose. Legs: femur IV with slight predistal constriction, stronger on III; feathery hairs not evident; legs soilencrusted; tarsi IV lack thicker setae ventrally. Spines: on tibiae I, II, weak. I: fe p1d2; ti v2.2 or v2; me v2.2. II: fe p1d3; ti v2.0; me v2.2. II: fe d2r1; pa d1; ti p2v2.2; me p0.1 r0.1 v2.2.2 IV: fe d2; ti p2r2v2.2; me p3r3v2.2. Palp: fe d2v0; ti p1. Palp: tibia ventrally excavate, cymbium distally broad; paracymbial spine a long sessile hook; bulb with long distinct pre-embolic constriction; embolus inserted prolaterally, with long tapering tip. Abdomen: petiolar collar short with definite dorsal component; dorsal scute black, smooth, for five-sixth of length, no constriction; ventral scute with concave anteromedial notch, laterally widens at ca. half length distally rounded.
Allotype female AM KS11504 . As ♂ except:
Carapace 2.32 long, 1.36 wide. Abdomen 2.28 long, 1.40 wide. Total length 4.7. Carapace: with diagonal band of white hairs in posterior striae, weakly evident in ♂. Carapace margins slightly serrate; fovea short. Chelicerae with small cluster of thick setae on fang mound; abdomen dorsally black with red brown rectanguloid scute for anterior third, bands of white hair anteriorly over scute and behind scute; in posterior third small recurved band with two large spots of white hair laterally; large trianguloid area of white hair laterally at half length; tracheal scute low, semicircular; from above, petiolar collar short with deep notch. Spines: palp fe d2; pa p1; ti p1d1; ta p1. Three weak bristles on ventral femora.
Distribution and Habitat. Known only from north-eastern New South Wales near Wauchope to Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve in the Australian Capital Territory and east to Bondi State Forest, near Bombala.
