Cossus centerensis Lintner, 1877 View in CoL
TYPE MATERIAL: Lintner’s (1877) original description was based on a pair of specimens in his collection, although he mentions four others subsequently collected by Meske at the same location; it is not clear whether Lintner was in possession of these additional specimens when he wrote his description. McCabe and Johnson (1980) list the two Lintner specimens as a male holotype (Type # 5366) and female allotype (Type#5367);however,Linterdidnotspecifyaholotype and the two must be considered syntypes.
The male syntype has been dissected, bearing a green label “Genitalia Slide/By P. Gentili——813/ NYSM ”, with an associated microscope slide labelled “NYSM./Genitalia m/no Loc. data/ Cossus / centerensis Lintner /P. Gentili, 1989–813/LECTOTYPE” . This lectotype designationwasapparentlyneverpublishedandvalidated. However we agree that such should be designated to fix the present concept of the taxon, since the possibility of additional Lintner specimens remains, and both Acossus species may occur in the region of the type locality. The following label will be added to the dissected male syntype ( Fig. 1 c View Figs ),here designated as lectotype:“ LECTOTYPE / Cossus centerensis /Lintner/desig . B. C. Schmidt 2024” .
