Columbia megacarpa Merrill (1912: 298) View in CoL
≡ Colona megacarpa (Merr.) Burret (1926: 800) ≡ Colona velutinosa Kostermans (1969: 443) syn. nov.
Type (lectotype, designated here):— PHILIPPINES. Palawan Island, Tanabag , December 1906, Manalo 7416 (US! [ US00603816 ]; isolectotypes NY! [ NY00415390 ], P! [ P06708680 ]).
In the protologue, the specimen Manalo 7416 is cited as type. Merrill (1912) specifies the Bureau of Science herbarium as reference, but this herbarium was destroyed during World War II ( Merrill 1945). Analysing the original collection kept in other herbaria, three duplicates in US, NY, and P of Manalo 7416 were found. Therefore, following Art. 9.3 of the ICN, is designate here the specimen in US ( US 00603816) as a lectotype of Colona megacarpa by choosing the best-preserved and complete specimen.
When Kostermans (1969) published the name Colona velutinosa , he based on the specimen Manalo 7416 in the US herbarium. Since this specimen was already the type of C. megacarpa , the name C. velutinosa is superfluous when published (Art. 52 of the ICN). For this reason, is indicated here the name C. velutinosa as a new homotypic synonym of C. megacarpa .
