Remarks
Zariquiey (1922a) in a previous publication announced the discovery of a new taxon (a subspecies of Speophilus kiesenwetteri ), based on four specimens collected by A. Codina on 12 October 1913, but provided no description. Subsequently, Zariquiey (1924) proposed the name castellsaperai as a infrasubspecific entity (“subraza”) as is shown in the publication (article 45.6.1.) in which he also described another new entities explicitly as subspecies of Speophilus kiesenwetteri . The name castellsaperai was used at a later date by Jeannel (1924a), which made it available for a subspecies of S. kiesenwetteri, Jeannel thereby becoming the author of this new subspecies (article 45.5.1.).
Zariquiey (1924) mentions “bastantes ejemplares” [plenty of specimens] collected by S. Novellas, of which we have located 10 in the MCNB collection, bearing red labels printed with “ Typus ” (the only exception is one labelled as “COTIPO”). Zariquiey also cites an indeterminate number of specimens collected by Faura i Sans and the four above-mentioned specimens collected by Codina. The specimens of the type series collected by Faura i Sans were deposited in the Biospeologica collection ( Zariquiey, 1924; Jeannel, 1924a) that is currently in the MNHNP. In fact, in box 73 of the general collection of the MNHNP we have found two of these specimens, labelled as cotypes, as well as one of the specimens of the series captured by Novelles (with identical capture labels to those of the specimens deposited in the MCNB and with the same red printed labelled indicating “ Typus ”). After Zariquiey’s description (1924), Codina (1924) cites three “Tipus” along with nine other specimens from the type locality with a capture date of 12 October 1913 deposited in his private collection. However, we have failed to find in the MCNB collection any of the specimens captured by Codina. In the MNCNM collection (box 27), we have found a specimen with an identical capture label to those from the series in the MCNB and with a red label printed with the inscription “Cotypus”.
