Type locality

Avenc de l’Arlà [original citation: “Prov. de Tarragona: Avenc de l’Arlá, barrio de les Pesses, término municipal de Albinyana, part. judicial de Vendrell”].

Type material

Syntypes: MZB 71-2387, MZB 71-2388 (1 ♂, 2 ♀♀), type loc., 1934, F. Español leg. (ex coll. R. Zariquiey) .

Remarks

Zariquiey (1950) mentions “unos pocos ejemplares” [a few specimens] from the type locality without designating the holotype (all specimens originally deposited in the author’s collection). In the MCNB collection we have found a male and two females without labels identifying them as belonging to the type series. However, the information on the collection labels and the hand-writing (belonging to F. Español and R. Zariquiey), as well as the original presence of this material in Zariquiey’s collection, allows us to attribute this material to the type series. Specifically, the labels do not indicate the collection date; Zariquiey (1950) likewise fails to mention it when citing the material from the type locality (other than in the introduction, in which he indicates that Español visited the caves in 1934). Escolà (1969) mentions these three specimens and dates them from 1934. Subsequently, Lagar (1980) and Escolà (1982) mention a precise date (28 January 1934) for the material collected by Español from Avenc de l’Arlà. This date coincides with that of the collection of material from another cave reported by Zariquiey (1950), Cova de Vallmajor, which is not, however, the type locality for ssp. arlai .
