Remarks

Zariquiey (1917) mentions as types two males and two females deposited in his collection but gives no other details. Subsequently, he notes the collection (A. Guimjuan leg.) of 35 specimens on 30 September and 14 and 21 October [1917], without details of where they are deposited.

Seven specimens in the MCNB collection have red labels printed with the inscription “ Typus ”. A further two specimens are identified as co-types: one has a red label printed with “Cotipus” and the other a hand-written red label stating “CO-TIPO”. Apart from one specimen ( MZB 78-1362 ), all the capture labels of these specimens indicate in the author’s hand-writing one of the three capture dates cited by Zariquiey (1917). We have located three further specimens not identified as belonging to the type series: MZB 71-4742 and MZB 78-1467, dated 14 October 1917 with the rest of the capture label identical to MZB 78-1357 (one with an inscription hand-written by Zariquiey stating “ Troglocharinus Ferreri ssp. Codinai nov”); and MZB 78-1364, with no collection date but with a capture label identical to MZB 78-1362 .

Escolà (1969) mentions a total of 10 specimens dated 21 October and two from 14 October (we have only been able to find five and three, respectively). He does not mention any of the specimens collected in September (two females, as the author of the description cites in the introduction), which would correspond to specimens MZB 78- 1361 and 78-1468.

In box 74 of the MNHNP general collection we have located at least three specimens with identical collection labels, but without labels that identify them as belonging to the type series. Jeannel (1924a) indicates textually “… type: cova fosca de Gava (coll. R. Zariquiey et coll. Biospeologica)”. In the MNCNM collection (box 28) we have also located two specimens (dated 14 and 17 October 1917) that lack labels that identify them as belonging to the type series .

In light of the information provided by Zariquiey (1917), including the introductory details, it is possible that the description was based on the series of 35 specimens mentioned at the end of the description, despite citing explicitly as “Tipos” only two undated males and two undated females.
