Cultus verticalis is commonly referred to as the Spiny Springfly ( Stark et al. 2012). The distribution of this species extends from Quebec south along the Appalachian Mountains to Georgia ( Kondratieff 2004, Myers and Kondratieff 2009, Verdone et al. 2017, DeWalt et al. 2024). Adult collection dates in New York range from early May to late June (Fig. 38 ). This species inhabits smaller streams compared to C. decisus , with records at elevations ranging from 126-489 m asl (Fig. 39 ). State records are from Level IV Ecoregions Catskill High Peaks (58 y), Northern and Western Adirondack Foothills (58 ab), Eastern Adirondack Foothills (58 ac), Central Adirondacks (58 ad), Tug Hill Plateau (58 ae), Tug Hill Transition (58 af), and Upper St. Lawrence Valley (83 e) (Fig. 40 c ).
