Trees or shrubs. Leaf variously pilose or glabrous, with or without stomatal crypts;
petiole with a pair of glands present or absent. Inflorescences racemose panicles, panicles or spikes; bracteoles usually much shorter than or rarely equaling calyx, not enclosing flower buds.
Petals absent. Sepals subequal, acute. Stamens 2–7
(8–11), unilateral or less frequently inserted in a complete circle; filaments shorter than or equaling the calyx lobes, mostly free to base and glabrous or less often sparsely pubescent. Ovary 1-carpellate,
pilose, inserted at the base of receptacle, style filiform. Drupe globose to ellipsoid, epicarp tomentose, pubescent, pulverulent, or smooth.

The genus comprises ca. 100 species,
distributed throughout the Neotropics ( Sothers et al. 2016). In Brazil, there are 74 species of Licania ,
present in all states of the North, Central-West and Southeast regions and in seven states of the
Northeast region ( Sothers & Prance 2023f). In EspÍrito Santo it is represented by 12 species .
