The genus comprises 28 species, distributed from Central and South America ( Sothers et al. 2016). In Brazil there are 20 accepted species, one of which occurs in EspÍrito Santo, Hymenopus heteromorphus var. heteromorphus (Benth.) Sothers & Prance.
