TYPE SPECIES: Vespertilio vampirus niger Kerr, 1792 .

COMMENTS: Originally named Pteropus by Brisson, 1762, in Regnum Animale, which is not available ( Hopwood, 1947). Formerly included arquatus and leucotis which were transferred to Acerodon by Musser et al. (1982a).
